About Istio
Istio is the most widely adopted service mesh for Kubernetes, providing a uniform way to secure, connect, and monitor microservices. It uses Envoy proxy sidecars to intercept all network communication.
Traffic management features include request routing, load balancing, fault injection, retries, and circuit breaking. Security provides mutual TLS, authorization policies, and identity management.
Observability features generate detailed telemetry for all service communication, integrating with Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger, and Kiali. Istio ambient mesh mode eliminates sidecar overhead.
As a CNCF graduated project, Istio has a large community and ecosystem. It is used by organizations that need advanced traffic management and zero-trust security for their Kubernetes workloads.
